Signs of Wealth in Southern Illinois in the 80s

Here’s my list of the signs you were rich in southern Illinois in the 80s.  I had some of them, I coveted most of them, and my parents were kind enough to spoil me with a good amount of them.  Hey, it paid to be a miner’s kid back in the day, right?

So here they are in no particular order.  Feel free to comment below and add to the list!  Enjoy!

Atari gaming system

Projection TV (impossible to see from anywhere other than dead-on!)

Leather bomber jacket

Who wasn't jealous of the kid who brought Capri sun in his/her lunch?

The clear telephone

Home computer (never had one!)

Cordless phone (slam the antenna back in when you hang up!)

Crayola 64. There's a SHARPENER in the back? PUHLEEEEASE MOM, I GOTTA have it!

Because awesome comes washed...by STONE.

I saved for MONTHS to buy my first pair of Kenny "Sky" Walkers. I still remember what I paid for them, too. $64.

My richest friend (his dad worked at a mine, too) got the first VCR I ever saw. It had a CORDED remote control. We watched Friday the 13th on it. It. Was. Awesome.

I lacked the self esteem necessary to consider myself cool enough to rock the MJ Thriller jacket...but deep down inside I really really wanted one.
